Hampden Academy
Hampden, ME
- Area: 120,000 sf
- Construction Cost: $49 million
Project Description: This project began with public visioning meetings to develop important project goals and establish community values to be incorporated into the design of the new High School.. Stemming from those decisions, some key spaces that were incorporated are a 900-seat performing arts center, three court gymnasium, wellness center, and a large multipurpose room available to the community. The classrooms are flooded with natural light from south-western facing windows outfitted with light shelves reflecting natural light deep into the space. Interior classrooms adjacent to the central dining commons receive natural daylight from a series of linear skylights that are located above an expansive interior glazed wall creating a dynamic and lively space at the building's core. The facility is outfitted with a 156-well, closed loop geothermal system providing heating and cooling to the building from harnessing the earth’s natural thermal properties. Solar hot water and daylight harvesting features also contribute to sustainability of the buildings design which was able to achieve LEED Gold Certification.
